This is a one-year course that carries a maximum of 20 UCAS points (Grade A) down to 6 UCAS points (Grade E). It is a Post 16 Qualification designed for students who wish to study mathematics post-GCSE but who prefer to do a more applied route where the mathematics is functional and geared towards solving real life problems in statistics, finance, sociology, psychology, health and medical sciences, ICT and linear programming and other applied fields where mathematics plays a fundamental role.
How will it be assessed?
Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies (Core Mathematics). Exam board: AQA.
- Analysis of Data
- Maths for personal finance
- Critical analysis of given data and models (incl. spreadsheets and tabular data)
- The normal distribution
- Probabilities and estimation
- Correlation and regression
The first three units of the compulsory content are assessed.
Written examination: two 1 hour 30 minute papers each worth 60 marks.
Where will it lead?
Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) is a new qualification designed for students who have achieved a grade 5 or above at GCSE. It helps to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking, and supports courses such as A-level Psychology, Sciences and Geography as well as technical and vocational qualifications. It also provides students with the skills and qualifications needed for entry onto University courses that have significant financial and statistical content.
Grade 5 or above in GCSE Mathematics.
